Part Two Chapters 5-9
We skipped chapters two through four because they were practically useless! ha
So here is the summary.. In preperation for Hate Week the proles start to become Rowdy. Winston dreams of when he can spend more time with Julia (a women he is in love with but can not marry because he is still legally marrie but yet seperated.) He wishes is first wife would die just so he could marry Julia. Thoughts of changing his identity to become a prole even cross his mind. He discusses the party and the history that they make up with Julia.
WInston meets with O'Brien a coworker and agrees to meet him at his house just so he can see a Newspeak dictionary. (the "new" language of his country.) He thinks rebelliously and knows he will soon end up at the ministry of Love where he will be killed.
Winston wakes up in the upstairs room of a shop which he as rented with his forbidden love Julia in his arms. He has been crying for he believes he was the man who murdered his mother. He wishes the party wouldn't of stopped human feelings all together. He knows he loves Julia but his love is not to be expressed. They both know of the dangers being together proposes, but they still agree to stay.
The next day the travel to O'Briens house together. He turns off the Telescreen and they all swear to rebellion. After Julia leaves the two men discuss the rebellion further.
At an Hate rally citizens get embarrassed when they are told they have been chanting things which are not true about the local war. Winston goes to the secret room and reads a book on teachings from a man against the party
Inference: Julia and Winston will get married and the proles will go forth with a Revolution.
Connection: This reminds me of slavery. When the African Americans were told things were better than they really were and that things would continue to get better.

Third Times a Charm!
Chapter 8
Summary: Winston walks through the run down part of town. The area where the proles live. He talks to an older man hoping to find some important information about the true past of the city. He realizes that this mans memory is far gone, and most proles do not care about the past. Then he stops by the same place he bought the diary. He buys a paperweight and talks with the owner. He shows him a picture of a church. As Winston walks home he realizes the girl from his office is following him home. He thinks about hitting her with the paperweight to get rid of the temptation she brings upon him. Then he decides that he should commit suicide to avoid toture from the thought police if they catch him.
Inference: He is NOT going to commit suicide. He is going to find some other way around the thought police. Probably getting the proles to help him out.
Connection: This part reminds me of Anne Frank and the Jews in Germany. They are always running and fearing for their lives. Never knowing what is going to happen.

Magic Number 2!
Chapters 4-7
Summary: (I did this reading in two different parts so I will summarize that way so that I am able to remember.)In the first part of this reading Winston is going to work at the Ministry of Truth. This is the part of the government that alters historical records so that they all match the teachings and ways of big brother. On this specific day he is altering a speech from the 80's. The man who gave the speech was a member of the Party but then turned against it. He was executed by the party, therefore he had was forced to make a new person up to make the story sound correct. Then he starts to reflect on the crazy ideas that Big Brother passes as correct.
In the second section (chapters 6&7) Winston writes in his diary about his hopes for a revolution or over ruling of the government. He realizes that any revolt must come from the "proles." They make up most of the population in the country but they are so poor the government does not care about them. They could easily have the man power and supplies to take over the police force. Then he reads a childrens book detailing the "supposed" history of the city. He does not believe that this history is correct. It shows perfect cities, with perfect children and perfect food supply. All of which is completly opposite in real life. He remembers a time when he caught the party/big brother in a lie. Covering for old party leaders when really they were in a different country commiting crimes. He just wants to tell things how he sees them. To express what reality truely is.
Connection: I still have the connection of being suppresed. Not being able to do what you want when you want. Or being told an awful secret by a friend and being force to keep it to yourself.
Inference: One of two things is going to happen. He is going to have to start running from big brother because they caught him with the diary. Or he is going to plan a revolt!!

The First of Many :)
Chapters 1-3
Summary: In the first three chapters of "1984" we find out alot of interesting details about the way people lived in and around this specific year. The story takes place in Oceania.
Winston is a member of the "party" or the government as we would call it. This party is also know as Big Brother. The government controls everything within the peoples lives. They control when you exercise, what you say, and even what you think. They have what is called the thought police. The government can tell all that you think and say. They can tap into your lives whenever they feel its necessary. If you say or think anything that goes against the government you will be sentenced to death!! Duh Duh Dun!!
Winston finds himself buying a diary and writing down his unpardonable thoughts. He comes home from work one day and realizes that he has written DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER! DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER! all over his notebook. Then all of a sudden a knock at the door. Could it be the thought police??
Nope! It is just his neighbor asking for plumbing help. Her children are part of a young spies program, and he fears they will figure him out. Their own mother is afraid of what they will do to her.
Then he goes back to his apartment to dream. He remebers dreams about his co-workers and his mother. (She strangely disappeared 20 years ago.).
After he comes back to reality he is forced to exercise. Feeling like someone is watching, he hears a voice coming from the T.V. telling him to try harder.
Inference: I am assuming he will go on with the diary. Tryin to hide his feelings and keep himself alive. I also think others are going to start feeling the same way.
Connection: The only real connection I can think of is times when I am sitting in my Debate class. I have a strong opinion about the subject being discussed, but I can not share. It starts to eat at you and you wonder if the thought will ever leave your mind.

Finally!!!!
Page 102-THE END
FINALLY the book is over. After Santiago catches the big fish, he starts to head back to his town. Then he is attacked by a shark. And another shark, and another shark and what the heck another shark. By the time he gets back to shore, there is nothing but a skeleton. But, it happens to be the biggest skeleton ever seen in the small town. The old man goes back to his life of reading the baseball and sleeping in the shack.
Connection: I think everyone has had an experience like this. You work yourself up and then it turns around and you don't get what you want. But in the end there is always a point to the disappointment.
