The Old Man and the Sea: Part Four

Pages 76-101
Summary: In this section of the book, we have the same OLD story line for half of the reading. He is trying to catch the fish, wishing for the boy, tryin to catch the fish..........
Then the fish starts to jump, and circle. Then the old man is able to pull him to the side of the boat, tie him up, and KILL him. GROSS!!!!
Then a shark catches the scent of the old mans blood, and starts to follow them. All of a sudden.... HE ATTACKS. and that is the end of the reading.
Connection: this reminds me of teenage years. We always wait and wait to grow up. And then it hits us like a ton of rocks. And we have no idea how to handle it.
Inference: The old man is going to be able to fight off the shark. Then he will pull in the fish and be able to make money. Give himself a better life.

The Old Man and the Sea: Part Three

Pages 51-76.
In this section of the blog, we go back to the same old scene. Santiago is on the boat, holding on to the same old fish, in the same old ocean! Boring! After about 15 pages of this we finally get some ACTION! YES!
He catches another fish on a different line, cuts it right open and eats it, RAW! EWW.
Then the big fish, starts tugging on the line. Then........ he jumps out of the water. He has long fins and looks glowing in the sunlight.
He still wishes the boy was with him. He misses him and wants his help because his hand has started to cramp. Then he catches a glimpse of a dolphin. And to my knowledge, he catches it.
Then the big fish goes back to floating in the water.
Inference: I think he will catch the fish. I HOPE he catches the fish. For the sake of my santity.
Connection: This reminds me of the diary of Anne Frank. I don't exactly know why. But it reminds me of her family waiting in the attic. Not knowing if they will ever be safe.

This post is dedicated to my wonderful, supportive, #1 follower.... Grandpa Larry. :)

The Old Man and the Sea: Part 2

So far we are on page 50 of this book. In this last block of reading we mostly read about Santiago and his time out on the water with out the boy. He went out to a place in the water that was very deep but he can see the swarms of fish. Finally he can feel a tug on one of his lines. He knows that he has hooked a big fish, but is not strong enough to reel it in. He waits on his boat for many hours, and when we leave him, it is night time and he is still stuck out on the water.
My inference: I think he will be able to reel the big fish in and change his luck.
Connection: I have had hard times, but I know that I can not give up. If I wait it out, like Santiago, things will get better with time.

The Old Man and The Sea: Part 1 (inference)

So I forgot to make an inference about what is going to happen next in the book. I think Santiago and the young boy are going to become fishing partners again and will start to have better luck out on the water.
Sorry about forgetting this part.... but hey, look at this 3 posts in one day!! I'm on a roll.

The Old Man and The Sea: Part 1

What is the difference between reality and non reality?? As we discussed this in class I was not sure what the point was. I never thought I would see something like the story of Samnubolism. But as I read the first 25 pages of our new book, we saw this question arise once again.
There is a young boy (still not sure on his name) and an old man named Santiago. They are two people who live in an ocean town and both love to fish. Santiago and the young boy, used to be fishing partners. Together they went without a fish for forty days. After that Santiago went another forty-four days without a fish. Then we read more about their lives and the way they live.
Then arises the question of the day, concerning reality and non reality. They start to discuss what they want to eat and what will be used to catch the fish the next day. Then, as soon as we start to follow along, we read that none of this is real. The rice, the fish, and the net are all a part of their imaginations. Even though this is not real. They pretend like it is each and every day.
Connection: This past year, my mom has been treated for Breast Cancer. Everyday, the members of my family go through the same routine. We put on a happy face and say everything is A OK! even when its not

Never Say Never!
